SUMMARY:A SATURDAY IN THE FOREST OF LE PETRIN
DESCRIPTION:OUTING\nAlif members\, friends and supporters spent  Saturday 14 June 2025 in the forest of le Petrin. The adventure was part walk to admire our nature park  and part to learn about our flora and fauna and their role in maintaining our ecological balance. \nDr Vencent Florens\, an excellent guide spoke in the layman’s language about the plant varieties\, the insects \, the birds and about the effort in avoiding extinction of our natural treasure. \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Honouring S. Lotun\, F. Aumeer n V. Florens 9 May 2025
DESCRIPTION:SPEECH SAFINA LOTUN 9 March 2025SPEECH FATHER LABOUR 9 MAY 2025SPEECH FARHAD AUMEER 9 MAY 2025SPEECH DR FLORENS 9 MAY 2025 \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nALIF SOCIETY organised a reception in honour of Ms Safeena Lotun\, elevated to CSKDr Vincent Florens elevated to OSK andFarhad Aumeer elevated to GOSK on the 12 March\n2025.\nOver 150 guess responded to our invitation. Pre-dinner cocktail was served at 1915 and dinner started at 2000 hours.\nIn her address\, Hon Shirine Aumeeruddy\, Speaker of the National assembly congratulated the laureates and highlighted the merits of the recipients of the National Awards.\nThe President on his turn spoke on each of the laureates\, pointing out how each one stood out for their contribution to Mauritius.\nEach laureate was offered a ship model as present.\nThe guest responded by thanking the organisers and how happy they were to be celebrated.\nEvent ended with desert and tea \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSPEECH SAFINA LOTUN 9 March 2025 \nLadies and Gentlemen\, \nFirst of all\, please allow me to welcome this audience which represents our pluralistic Mauritius. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. If you would allow me\, let me say a few words about Alif. Without great resources\, we have supported talented young people in their university studies. We have helped 38 students to graduate and post graduate in medicine\, 150 in engineering\, 5 in architecture\, to name just a few of the 400 and counting\, who have already completed their studies in Malaysia so far. And I would like to take the opportunity to make a special mention of a former Alif student who now leads an oncology research team at the University of Southampton in the UK and another who is responsible for installing simulators on behalf of Pratt and Whitney\, a US aircraft manufacturer. We also have an agreement with Chisty Hospital in Pakistan for the free treatment of patients who are inoperable in Mauritius. The contribution of our guests has gone a long way in this achievement. Our bank account shows that you have already contributed just enough to sponsor one Malagasy student. So\, thank you very much indeed. \nAlso let’s say a big thank you for this dinner to the SIMS company\, whose directors\, the charming Mimi and her husband Swaley Peerkhan are here\, as well as to the Director of Water Edge Garden\, Ali Rojid\, who is hosting us this evening. \nThis dinner is special and gives me a peculiar feeling. \nDid you know the houses of Daureeawoo\, Allyman Peerbux\, Sohawon and Baucha are within a stone throw from each other in Vale and that Choomka’s is in my street whereas Eshan Joomun’s folks are five minutes away and that their grand dads of were my friends. \n\nFarhad is the son of my colleague and friend.\nDr Conhya is the son the great trade unionist and prolific writer\, among the most elegant and well-dressed civil servant and a good friend of mine\n\nA special hi to my friend Dawood Rawat and to Usha Canabady who shines everywhere she goes \nTonight\, Alif has organized this event to celebrate four among the best of our compatriots\, one woman and three men: Mrs. Safina Lotun\, elevated to the rank of CSK\, Dr Vincent Florens elevated to OSK\, Father Maurice Labour and Hon Farhad Aumeer\, both elevated to the rank of GOSK. These laureates serve as an example to the whole of Mauritius and who will\, I hope\, serve to inspire a new generation. They are four personalities with impeccable qualities that we celebrate without them asking to be admired\, recognized or celebrated. There are four of them\, four journeys\, four destinies\, four stories that go towards giving a new direction to our homeland. These heroes are the new face of Mauritius who have uplifted the values of the Republic. \nWe would like to see them as the precursors of a Mauritius that has left the beaten track and enters with full force and confidence to face the new challenges. We would like our children to be enthused with the same vitalities\, and spurred by the same convictions and the same love of their country. If we have invited them\, it is because they are the symbol of commitment and courage. \nFrankly\, our wish would be to celebrate them separately to render a tribute that they deserve. Alas! If wishes were horses\, beggars would ride. \nFor Mrs. Lotun\, courage is political and an irresistible choice. Safeena Lotun\, as tradition dictates\, I would summarize your career in a few sentences: you completed your secondary studies at Queen Elizabeth College and your tertiary studies at the University of Paris VIII\, which granted you a Master’s degree in law. You have spent 27 years in the service of the nation as a civil servant in close collaboration with the greatest clerks of the State\, particularly at the Presidency\, the Executive and the judiciary.  You have been Administrative Secretary of the regional interparliamentary organisations and a member of the Society of Clerks\, a status that has allowed you to enrich yourself further by participating in conferences\, seminars and other workshops. You have also shone beyond our shores being internationally recognized for your efforts to promote the use of ICT in parliament and consolidating the partnership between our National Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union \nEvaluating the function of our parliament during COVID 19\, the 2023 Global Report on e-Parliament highlights the resilience of our August Assembly. It is thanks to your efforts Dear Madam.  Today\, Safeena\, you are an advisor to the President of the National Assembly. \nFolks\, Ms. Lotun sat in Parliament without being elected and without being a member of any political party. She denounced in her own way the infernal repression and profanation of the Assembly which we would like to call august. She did not give in to the speaker\, who wanted to muzzle the opposition with the infamous “I order you out”. Alone against all\, she was not afraid to defend freedom. But “all” had a dimension defined by autocrats who brought together the National Radio-Television\, the judiciary and other institutions in a fightback. She says goodbye to the National Assembly and leaves the fight to the people who had the last word by saying to the gravediggers of democracy: “we order you out”. This principle of virtuous living is worth a place in our Hansard. \nMadam\, there is a saying that would be very fitting – no one is a prophet in his or her own country. A nation can outlive its fools\, and even the ambitious members. But it cannot survive the betrayal from within\, according to Cicero\, a famous Roman senator.  And then\, the potentates who harassed you hadn’t heard this Turkish wisdom that could apply to them: when you introduce a clown into a castle\, the clown doesn’t become king\, but it’s the castle that becomes a circus. Congratulations. \nSPEECH FARHAD AUMEER 9 MAY 2025 \nAfter giving the loudspeaker\, the marching orders and clearing the space to Shirine\, our lady of grace and dignity\, the Mauritian people\, in their great wisdom\, opened their arms wide to welcome Farhad Aumeer to the National Assembly in November 2024. What intrigues me is “what is the source of inspiration for my friend Ibrahim\, your father\, to call his first child Farhad\, a Persian or Afghan name meaning “charmer”\, “man of joy”\, “intelligent” and a name also associated with courageous and virtuous characters. I grant it\, it’s a wise choice because Farhad has lived up to his name. \nAfter brilliant studies in London\, Farhad received his MBBCh BAO\, M.R.C.O.G and then F.R.C.O.G. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK)\, a Fellow of the Royal Irish Academy of Medicine in June 1993 and then a Fellow of the British Society of Colposcopists. He teaches medicine at the University of Mauritius while helping and lending his support to the World Health Organization. Farhad\, you are married and you have two sons\, both lawyers\, and a daughter who works in London. Your sister Shenaz and her husband Ali are here with you tonight and I greet you all. \nFarhad\, you’re a doctor\, it’s a profession I know well. I am not a doctor but I have helped admit at least forty students to medical schools in Malaysia.  At least a dozen are serving the country in different hospitals. By taking into account the evolution of medical knowledge that has brought about treatments you were not aware of at the time of your studies\, you have maintained your hunger to always remain at the top of your profession. It was great to listen to your public interventions during the COVID 19 panic that stunned an entire people a few years ago. \nSuggestions for treatment were coming from numerous sources\, sometimes some conflicting with others. You had an authoritative voice that made me think of the words of Arthur chopenhauer who had said: What the herd hates most is the one who thinks differently; it is not so much the opinion itself\, but the audacity of wanting to think for themselves\, something that the herd does not \nknow how to do. And Galileo Galilei “In the sciences\, the authority of thousands of opinions is not worth as much as one tiny spark of reason in an individual man.” \nYou helped the nation and the medical profession proposing diagnoses and remedies that became standard references. Obviously\, we cannot control a crisis and a global pandemic without the collaboration of all the expertise available. COVID 19 was a health crisis that threatened to mutate and evolve in worrying conditions. Decisions had to be made in all lucidity. Faced with the seriousness of the situation\, you willingly and courageously committed yourself to the service of your country because health remains at the heart of your concerns. Then your collaboration was won and the battle was won. What a tremendous achievement! Leo Tolstoy approves of you; he said If you feel pain\, you are alive. If you feel other people’s pain\, you are a human being. \nNo wonder then that your services are in high demand and so is your friendship which I judge by the number of colleagues and friends who has accompanied you tonight and whom I greet with great pleasure. I will limit myself to mentioning your medical career which brought you to the attention of the many. Also\, Congratulations for the \nGOSK\, an additional feather to your cap which you fully deserve. \nSPEECH FATHER LABOUR 9 MAY 2025 \nAfter Father Souchon\, Bishop Piat and Bishop Durhone\, Father Maurice Labour would have been the fourth representative of the Catholic Church to be honoured by Alif Society. But our proposed honoree has opted to attend the wedding of a relative. We respect his choice. \nAllow me to open a parenthesis to tell you how pleased I was to have had the privilege of dining with bishop Piat and the Apostolic Nuncio on his visit to Mauritius. Inviting Father Maurice Labour and honoring him in front of an audience like the one in front of me would have been a pledge of fruitful relations that have been continued and nurtured between the Catholic Church and Alif Society. We would also like to celebrate the good memories left by Pope Francis in his fight on behalf of the wretched of the earth. Let me reminisce on my involvement along Jean Yves Violette\, whose lovely wife is with us\, and Father Filip Fanchette to bring those involved with friends of Caritas closer to Andy Young\, Governor of Georgia in the United States. \nDear Friends. The exploit of our guests\, together with the respect of the entire nation which shares the same ideal\, must make them excited at the idea of taking over. And I am pleased to express my very warm congratulations to them on my own behalf and on behalf of Alif Society. Alif Society believes that the greatness of our country is based on its history\, with its dark pages as well as its glorious pages. What we are doing tonight\, in your presence\, my dear friends\, will be history tomorrow and we want to open a glorious page to inscribe the names of our laureates for their love for our rainbow nation. \nJoin me wish our journalist friend Murtuza Rahim a very happy birthday. And I leave you to reflect on this question: is it man who creates history or is it history that creates man? Thank you. \n  \nSPEECH DR FLORENS 9 MAY 2025 \nBear with me for an important diversion. I would like to welcome back Dr Eshan Dulloo\, the new President of Mauritius Wild Life Foundation\, an ace in biodiversity conservation\, who during forty years has been active at the FAO\, the World Bank\, our Ministry of Agriculture as Asst Conservator of Forests\, an Emeritus at the Alliance of Biodiversity International engaged in food security and where he is Honorary Research fellow after retirement. Eshan has been a key player to establish our national park and the World Bank “Seeds for needs” strategy which entitled him to the Food Planet prize in 2023. As he is back in his motherland\, we are sure he will help to protect and restore our unique diversity. \nEshan has introduced to me our next Honoree who is Dr Francois Benjamin Vincent Florens who obtained a distinction for his PhD project and who has studied at the Universities of Mauritius and East Anglia. His professional life has evolved around our flora through the Universities of Mauritius and East Anglia\, MSIRI\, the Kew Royal Botanic Garden and the Mauritius Wild Life Foundation. And when I proposed that we should meet on a certain week\, he read me his engagement: the whole week was dedicated to going out in our woodlands. I started wondering whether I was dealing with a Tarzan. \nFolks\, this week the world of Eshan and Vincent was the talk of the town with the arrival of Odysseo\, the brave French group who wants to rid our oceans from the curse of plastics. And we have invited the Director and the Dep Director of Agence Francaise de Developpement to show our appreciation for the historic work they are involved in as lead initiators. \nFolks\, nature and its preservation is and should be everybody’s concern. Unfortunately\, we have not been very kind to it. We have introduced goats on Round Island which grazed around the roots of our Unique Palm tree\, deprived it of the water retained by the grass\, killed many of them as well as the Unique Mauritian round Island snake and lizard. We pollute our lagoon and are deciding since half a century how to dispose of house effluents along coastal villages. Our woodland is diminishing drastically and we are left only the ocean if we are looking for\, what the French describes as EVASION. \nIn this context\, we need an army of Dr Florens to save us from ourselves.  His nearly lonely voice is drowned in the cacophony of goyaves de Chine pickers and lumber hungry builders. So\, let us show him our collective concern in solidarity with our motherland and our environment in his fight against threats to our flora and fauna and in ecological education. Let us protect our lagoon and our ground water from degradation\, let us save our rare species of plants and animals\, let us save our lungs which are our woodlands. Let us make Mauritius a hub\, this popular word\, of ethic living. And let us give Dr Florens a round of applause for his great ambition and understand that we will be alive only if we stop the violence against nature. \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:EID CELEBRATIONS AT INDIAN HC IN EBENE APRIL 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGIFT TO ALIF SOCIETY BY INDIAN HC \n  \n  \nThe luxurious reception hall of the Indian High Commission in Ebene was decorated in Eid images\, and its parking lot was full to the brim with the cars of the guests who were mostly notables of the local Muslim Community. The occasion was Eid Milan\, and Mr. Anurag Srivastava\, the sympathetic Indian High Commissioner\, and his staff hosted us at 1830 hours in the majestic style that the Indian High Society usually does.\nThe MC\, an elegant lady member of the staff\, welcomed the guests in Lucknowi Urdu with special quotes from the Urdu literati. Lines from Mir Taki Mir and Mirza Ghalib sounded like the pieces of Ravi Shankar and Ustad Zakir Hussein.\nThe MGI presented a dance to the tune of Laal Meri and Lalmohamed Group gave us a treat with five of their best pieces. The Indian Architecture with Muslim imprints was another showpiece that took us on a journey through the era of Mogul India.\nThe High Commissioner\, true to the commitment of plural India\, spoke about the vibrant India’s Muslim population and their contribution to the economy\, art and education of their country. He further laid emphasis on the resilience of the local Muslim community and the links they maintain with India especially through Aligarh Muslim University.\nFinally the guests were treated to a sumptuous Indian buffet with carrot halwa and Qulfi Malaye as dessert.\nIn the name of Alif Society and the happy guests\, I would like to thank the Indian High Commission with which we have had relations for a very long time for its bridge-building. India is bigger than the individuals or the political\, cultural and social organisations that claim to represent this giant of a sub-continent.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF CJ BERNARD SIK YUEN
DESCRIPTION:ALIF SOCIETY HONOURED CJ SIK YUEN OVER A DINNER AT BAECH GARDEN RESTAURANT IN GRAND BAY ON HIS PROMOTION TO CJ. \n  \n  \nSPEECH OF THE PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY \nIn its long list of Honorees\, it is the first time that ALIF is inscribing a member of the Judiciary. Simply because he is different. He is all smiles at functions. He speaks his mind. He speaks of his vision. He had over half an hour for me in an office where he said he was squatting. If you doubt my words\, go to China Town street market and you will meet His Lordship. Greet him and he will reply as if he has known you for ages. Born in 1947\, Bernard Sik Yuen completes his secondary education at St Joseph College and graduates in law at Leeds University; he then obtains a scholarship for PhD in Paris 11\, joins the Judiciary\, is appointed judge in 1989 and becomes CJ in 2007\, the last in a line of distinguished appointments he has held. This is a remarkable occasion to celebrate the appointment of a remarkable man who has for decades been one of the leading figures of the legal world and whose influence\, as an unelected individual vested with power\, has extended deep into the great issues of the day affecting the people of this country.\nMy Lord\, you are heading the Supreme Court of our country when the press is talking of Justice a deux vitesses and the best justice money can buy. Quid faciant leges\, ubi sola pecunia regnat? On the other hand\, globalization is impacting on the image of the judiciary the world over. One politician chooses symbolically the esplanade in front of the Supreme Court to hold his meetings. That is why\, of all the buildings in Port Louis\, the Supreme Court is among the most sensitive to the weather outside.\nThe most valuable asset of any profession is its collective reputation and the judiciary is no exception. There is a serious danger that news flash from overseas may add up to cause a decline in respect and an increase in the cynicism of the public. “To distrust the judiciary\,” said Honoré de Balzac\, “marks the beginning of the end of society.” In Britain\, judges are one of the most respected groups. But in America they tend to be held in low esteem\, particularly when we learn of such episodes as:\nA $54m lawsuit over a pair of pinstriped trousers that went missing from a Washington\, DC\, cleaners was thrown out by a judge this week.\nA judge ordered to strip-search and jail 11 defendants for arriving late.\nMy Lord\, you are assuming a duty whose responsibility may be trying. But it is also a responsibility that is exalting and is a guarantee for stability and harmony of our society. Our citizens trust their justice. They place their hope on you. The traditions you have inherited and your personal commitments must satisfy the expectations of our country. The survival of our democracy depends upon the existence of a free and independent judiciary under your leadership.\nPeople who have been fortunate to work with you and to know you well recall the principles and ideals that guide you and stand this country well: you are a man of courage and compassion\, of humanity and justice. You are “One of the best CJs we have had”\, according to solicitor Pazany Rengasamy. You are “A gentleman”\, according to Shakeel Mohamed\, MNA and barrister. Dick Ng Sui Wah adds: “The administration of justice will be rendered more efficient.”\nYou are like the ideal judge of Isaiah chapter 11\, verses 3 -5: “He will not judge by appearances\, nor decide by hearsay; but he will act with justice to the poor and decide with fairness for the meek of the land”. And whatever the pressures you have been under\, your humanity and courtesy have never wavered. Nor has your energy.\nYou are in tune with our compatriots who want a humane justice as was your stand when the conflict of Campement Owners versus the State was brought to you\, a justice that is responsible and which gives all its importance to the principle that one is innocent until proven guilty. Summum jus\, summa injuria. Justice Extreme justice est extreme Injustice\nOur people want an expedient justice and a stop to long period of remand along the principle that justice delayed is justice denied. They want security against all forms of violence and organised crimes. Criminal behaviour would not change if the sanctions are not executed with severity. The best laws of the world are useless if not well administered. In this exercise\, the judiciary occupies a preponderant role. The jurisprudence\, the quality of the men and women of your institution\, the sum total of their knowledge\, their competence\, make of your institution recognised and respected. The importance of what judges do and the part their decisions plays in the life of the nation means that those decisions cannot be immune from robust public debate – and My Lord\, I know you would not disagree.\nYou are a great Lord Chief Justice – and you have been a great judge.\nI understand you will attain normal retiring age soon. Take heart. Judges don’t age though they deal with law which is only 3 days younger than humanity. Time decorates them. The nation is in your debt for what you have accomplished and looks forward with great hope for a new dawn. We wish you very well.

SUMMARY:VISIT BY THE PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY TO THE PERLIS ROYALTY
DESCRIPTION:ALIF SOCIETY has a long love affair with Malaysian Education. Malaysian Universities have helped graduate over three hundred ambitious young boys and girls who are gainfully employed in Mauritius and abroad\, in a variety of fields such as: engineering\, actuarial science\, architecture and finance\, including Islamic finance. In fact\, the first two Mauritian Graduates in Islamic banking were sponsored by Alif.\nAlif Society girls\, as in most societies\, have proved to be head and shoulders above the boys …………………… one is leading a team of 30 researchers on cancer at the University of Southampton in England where an Alif surgeon is practicing and one is the lead member of a team in Canada to install plane simulators around the world. This brilliant young lady is spending more time in the air than on solid ground and more often than not\, “flies” to her dream motherland on her simulator.\nCovid 19 had imposed a total ban on the face to contact between Alif management with that of the Malaysian Universities. Virtual communication is a poor alternative to a physical meeting between two partners in negotiating collaboration. The opening of both Mauritian and Malaysian skies allowed Alif President to renew contacts.\nOne important meeting took place in Perlis\, the smallest Malaysian state which houses a few Universities\, at UNIMAP or University Malaysia Perlis\, a foremost Engineering Institution and KUIPS\, a newly set-up institution dedicated to Islamic Studies. Malaysia lives the middle of the Road Islam and has a faculty of Islamic Religion in all its Institutions of Higher Learning; KUIPS\, on the other hand is dedicated totally to Islamic Studies.\nThe President of Alif\, Dawood Auleear\, was received the HRH Raja Muda [Prince] Perlis over lunch in Kangar\, capital of Perlis\, where he had a discussion with the leaders of the two Perlis Institutions in the presence of the Chancellor\, [HRH Raja Muda Perlis]. The outcome would surely please Muslims here: HRH has offered five scholarships yearly to anyone to graduate in all fields of Islamic Knowledge. The quantum is elastic to accommodate more if the need is felt. KUIPS would be willing to send lecturers to Mauritian Islamic Schools if they receive any request and partner\, if invited\, in Forums organised by local Islamic Formations on topics relevant to the present needs of the Ummah. \n  \nMEETING WITH HRH THE PRINCE OF PERLIS DURING WHICH HRH OFFERED TO FINANCE A CONFERENCE TO BE ORGANISED BY ALIF \nEXCHANGE OF GIFTS WITH TUANKU OF PERLIS \nDINNER WITH TAN SRI SYED [IN THE MIDDLE] AND CRIS GUOY AT THE GRAND HAYATT

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF AMBASSADOR GAO YU CHEN\, NIRVAN VEERASAMY\, SANJAY BUCKHORY AND ARNAUD MARTIN
DESCRIPTION:ARNAUD MARTIN \nNIRVAN VIRASAMY \nAMBASSADOR GAU YU CHEN \nSANJAY BUCKHORY \n  \nSPEECH IN HONOUR OF THE FOUR GUESTS BY THE PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY \nExcellencies\, Ladies and Gentlemen\,\nThank you very much for responding so generously to our invitation to welcome HE the new Chinese Ambassador\, to celebrate the appointments of Nirvan Veersamy as Chairman of MK\, of Sanjay Buckhory as President of MK and the elevation of Arnaud Martin to CSK.\nThank you for joining ALIF in making of Mauritius a paperless island in accepting our invitation by phone\, sms\, fax and e-mail.\nThe change of venue for this function was proposed by Baby Chattur whose soft voice will win over the most stubborn decider. The table layout\, the menu and the cocktail is the product of the F&B Mr. Guness to whom I am indebted for his invaluable advice.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF FRENCH AMBASSADOR JACQUES MAILLARD
DESCRIPTION:AMBASSADOR JACQUES MAILLARD \nSPEECH OF THE PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY \nJe voudrais dire combien je suis heureux de me retrouver parmi l’arc en ciel Mauricien pour accueillir S E l’Ambassadeur de France et Mme Dobelle.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF LAWYERS AND ATTORNEYS WHO TOOK SILK
DESCRIPTION:Me ANDRE ROBERT \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nALIF HONOURED MEMBERS OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION WHO TOOK SILK OVER A DINNER PORT LOUIS \n  \n  \n  \nSPEECH OF THE PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY \nMe ZUBEIDA ISMAEL SALAJEE \nLadies and Gentlemen\,\nThank you for this massive turn-up to honor members of the bar and the law society\,\n1. Anwar Abdool Hamid Moollan and\n2. Louis Charles Denis Hervé Duval\, who have taken silk and\n3. Zubeida Ismael Salajee and\n4. André Joseph Rousset Robert\, who have been elevated to Senior Attorneys.\nIt was an encouraging start ………. Everyone accepted our invitation to be honored but ALIF didn’t take into account the fact that Professionals have exigencies of their trade that can defeat all expectations. The latest to apologize is Nargis Bundhun who has undergone surgery yesterday. Let us wish her prompt recovery.\nFacing the daunting task in talking to so many learned lawyers\, solicitors and members of the Bench\, I chose to deliver my speech after dinner when I believe you would be mellower and forbearing.\nAlif Society feels honoured to celebrate the achievements of these Icons this evening which is a proud occasion not only for the recipients but for their parents and partners\, families and friends. These are the dear ones who have supported them in their journey to this day\, and have all rights to share some of the pride. We would like to congratulate them for the sacrifices they have made to reach this milestone and to have been justly rewarded for their investment in terms of time and forgone pleasures.\nOur administration of justice is in the news\, unfortunately\, for wrong reasons: the talk of two-tiered practice\, the best justice money can buy\, or justice open to everyone just as first class travel is\, double standard and banana republic are the terms used to describe it. In other words\, the description brings water to the mill of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon who said: laws are spider webs for the rich and mighty\, steel chains for the poor and weak\, fishing nets in the hands of the government. In the absence of a World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index which measures how the rule of law is experienced by ordinary people\, we are swayed to give credence to this opinion.\nTwo centuries ago\, Adam Smith underlined that the prerequisite of economic success was a sound system of law supported by a trusted and trustworthy cadre of lawyers to provide legal advice and representation. The trouble\, however\, is that\, criminals know their rights better than their wrongs. Hence\, a body of high quality advocacy is essential to maintain the rule of law\, a sine qua non condition for the existence of a civilized society. Sr. Counsels and Sr. Attorneys\, be the vigilant ears of the blindfolded lady so that mortals like us would look with confidence to your advice as the ambassadors of the rule of law and to represent us before the courts. \nRespected members of the Bar and the Law Society\, the Justice system has been reinvigorated as a result of your insertion into the community of the Seniors with the added assurance of His Lordship the Chief Justice that you are the cream of the profession. Being the cream is the unique attribute to make excellence as an advocate.\nThe presence of three ladies in your ranks bodes for a profound change in the way law will be practiced. A study shows that women’s neurobiological and genetic difference from men will inevitably lead to much less litigation.\nMauritius is trying hard to be a brand name for efficiency\, integrity\, transparency\, resourcefulness and the rule of law. We wish that your recognition crosses our borders to reach the Commonwealth and indeed the whole world\, to attract business for our law firms which are an important pillar of our service industry. Members of the legal profession love to stress that the practice of law is a noble calling. But let us be frank. It is a business as well. Each business needs a brand. And a SC brings incalculable recognition to the value of the brand and goes a long way to attract business.\nAnd allow me not to restrain myself to applaud with both hands the high earnings of some of your members. One cannot go against human nature which is attracted to those jobs with the highest rewards as long as\, in the case of lawyers and attorneys\, the fees are commensurate with their constitutional responsibilities and the issues at stake. If we yearn to have a first class legal profession\, we need our ablest youths to join the profession; it is sheer folly to expect to attract them by miserable financial rewards. Forma Pauperis is here to take care of the less fortunate. \nOn a lighter note\, do you know the story as told by an American judge when his wife changed her name on her Face book account? She was submerged with advertisement from divorce lawyers who suspected she had divorced and the commercial opportunities that had opened to them. The reflection of some thinkers prods you to question: who needs a lawyer or an attorney after all when you cannot even sue Hitler as Martin Luther King\, Jr. said; everything Hitler did in Germany was legal and King was supported by Demonax the Cynic who averred that all laws are useless; for good men do not need laws at all\, and bad men are made no better by them.\nAbel and Caen proved that where there are people there will be crime. And where there is crime\, there must be a legal system. And in desperation\, humanity will shout Bring back the Lawyers and Solicitors.\nCongratulations again and thank you for your attention. \nLadies and Gentlemen\,\nYou must surely know that apart from Bridge-building\, Alif is also involved in promoting the education of ambitious young Mauritians. Tonight\, we have included in our list of honorees\, Nushrath Maghoo\, a lady with impeccable credentials. After bright secondary studies at le Bocage\, she qualified as a graphic designer at Charles Telfair Institute but changed her mind to convert to a Beauty Specialist and graduated from the London School of Beauty and Make Up and the International Academy of Florida.\nShe has undertaken the maquillage of characters of the three Musketeers\, Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland and the hairstyling and make-up of Fashion Models and Brides at several weddings in Florida. She was elected among the top 20 Junior Style Stars when she represented her Academy in September 2014 in South Daytona in the largest American inter-State Bridal up-do competition.\nAt present\, she is offering affordable and qualitative services to trendy Mauritian woman under an exquisite roof in Royal Street\, Port Louis\, with a professional smile.\nPut your hands together and wish this young lady the best of luck.\nI will now invite Mrs. Vyapoory to offer a present in the name of Alif to\nMr. Moollan\, to Mr. Duval and to Ashraff bin Azmaan\nAnd Mrs. Husnoo to\nMiss Salajee\, Mr. Robert and Miss Maghoo.\nI’ll leave the floor to Mr. Moollan who will speak on behalf of the Silks\nand Mr. Robert who will speak on behalf of the Sr. Attorneys.\nEnjoy you deserts now.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF KEVIN RAMKHELAWON AND JACQUES LI WAN PO
DESCRIPTION:Ladies and Gentlemen\,\nI am going this evening to recognize the achievements of two great Mauritians: Kevin Ramkhelawon\, the new CEO of Business Mauritius and Jacques Li Wan Po\, elevated to GOSK last March. Gentlemen\, I guess this is a proud day for you\, your family\, whom we have invited to witness this function\, your friends and especially your spouses who have suffered with you. This is also a culmination of the long and hard hours in sometimes the sprints and at times the marathon you have been running through your professional career. Congratulations for having lasted the challenge. They say “No pain\, no Gain.” May I add that all those present here share the belief and confidence of ALIF SOCIETY that you deserve the distinctions you have earned.\nKevin\, the position you have reached is much sought after. The Head hunters have been in search of the depth of your expertise\, experience and eminence in your fields. Your selection is a mark of quality applauded by the Business community and a seal of guarantee to Mauritians that the management of their economy is in sure hands.\nLadies and Gentlemen\, Kevin was a Fulbright Scholar in 2011\, Winner of the Mauritius State Scholarship 1993: a three-year educational scholarship Awardee of the Mauritian Government to national A-Levels toppers\, has an extremely rich career: Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority\, when Mauritius recorded a two-year consecutive growth in tourist arrivals\, Director of New Business Development at the Board of Investment\, where he has been responsible for the development of new strategic economic sectors such as the Ocean economy\, the Africa hub and the film industry among others. He has worked on five national budgets under three Ministers of Finance.\nHe also has extensive consulting experience in various national and regional organisations and a range of industries ranging from financial services\, telco\, real estate to public sector. And now as the CEO of Business Mauritius\, he has laid out his vision in an extensive press interview. Kevin\, congratulations and may you succeed to make your dream come true. \nJacques\, you have been at the forefront of the battle for development and your skills have been much in demand. I wonder how you have been able to put up with so many assignments and still look fresh and young.\nIt will take quite some time to detail Jacques’ long CV ; so I will dare do some injustice and I am sure my good friend Jacques won’t mind\, I’ll remain on what I consider the most important ones: After leaving the RCPL\, Jacques graduated as an FCCA in England after which he served as Board Director of 11 big Entities\, to name a few\, MCB\, BoM\, SEAB and Small Enterprise and Handicraft Development Authority; he has been President of Mauritius Gymkhana\, Rotary Club of QB and Mauritius Manufacturers Assn.\nAt present he is Chairman and MD of Li Wan Po Group\, Rank 63 in the top 100 companies of Mauritius and Vice President of Medine Limited\, rank 68.\nThis is no small feat Jacques. I am glad that your dedication\, talent and abilities have earned you a national recognition. All firms need visionaries like you. To me\, your elevation is not a surprise. This occasion truly calls for a grand celebration and Alif is proudly doing just that. Congratulations. May you meet more glory in your life ahead and May all your dreams for the future come true.\nGentlemen\, you are in dangerous target-rich territories with an added disadvantage of shifting economic environments. You will be confronted with multiple dilemmas: What will you do? Will you favour creative destruction? What will you do when faced with the man who was smoking in bed in the burning house? Will you leave him die to teach him a lesson? Or do you save him\, stop the risk of surrounding houses catching fire and then reprimand him for reckless behaviour?”.\nRemember: you can make economic crises less likely to happen and less severe when they do occur\, you cannot abolish them. Something will go wrong again and again and you do not know exactly when. So\, do create the anti-fragile system that can withstand potential shocks when they happen.\nShall I end with the observation of John Kay that\, “Profit is not the only purpose of business like breathing is not the only purpose of living.” It is also the tool to bring upon the Bonheur National Brut.\nI would like to congratulate you both again and wish you well for the future.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF JUDGE NARAIN
DESCRIPTION:Speech to honour Judge Narain \nLadies and Gentleman\,\nI am going to speak about Justice Aruna Narain\, a lady whose roots are in my village of Vale. Her grandfather’s contemporaries were those of Rashid Daureawoo\, Judge Hamuth and of Anwar Husnoo. Anwar’s Nana\, known as Sheik was a big small planter making the rounds of his domain on a BSA\, old man Daureeawoo\, a sixieme passé\, was a Moniteur finally recycled to become a big small planter like Hamuth whereas Master Narain pursued a career as a Teacher. This first generation of Vale people were quite advanced for their time and their vision helped produce a large number of professionals today and I have made it a point to gather some of their grandchildren….. Fazila Hamuth\, Rashid Daureeawoo\, Anwar Husnoo and of course Aruna. \nAruna holds an LL.M from London School of Economics and has a rich working experience at the Attorney-General’s Office serving successively as State Counsel\, Senior State Counsel\, Principal State Counsel\, Assistant Parliamentary Counsel and Assistant Solicitor-General. She was appointed Parliamentary Counsel in 2011. \nShe has lectured at the Council of Legal Education where she was a board member and she attended several conferences as part of a team at the Commonwealth secretariat\, the Human Rights Commission\, the Law of the Sea Conference and has also served at the Electoral Commission. \nMadeleine Albright’s has said ‘there is a special place in Hell for women who don’t help other women. Pioneering women must champion the cause of women generally; otherwise the world will slip back into its complacent old masculo-centric ways”. Our Judicial and Legal commission has proved that women in Mauritius do not need the backing of their likes as we don’t use the tap on the shoulder method in appointing our judges. \nProfessor Erika Rackley remarked that “ A judge has to be seen as “supra human” and can’t be imagined as having a bath or doing the washing up and went on to compare the woman judge with Andersen’s little mermaid. Aruna\, I hope you are do not fit that description. \nThe foundation of any civilization is built on law and you have chosen to be its ardent and loyal servant. And I cannot improve on the decision of the Judiciary to appoint you at the Apex court. \nAs a young judge\, you are expected to abide by the Magna Carta for Judges “To no one will we sell\, to no one deny or delay right or justice”. You may\, why not\, choose to mould a new judicial culture which is a pressing need in Mauritius where the administrators of justice have taken a beating lately to the point of relegating the concept of honour to anachronism and reducing it as a stylish and polite language. \nWe are sure that you will not swerve from applying the law impartially and keeping alive its impartiality in decision making. Please\, do administer justice with a firm hand\, dignity and fairness. \nThere is no doubt that becoming a Judge is due recognition of years of hard work\, dedication and ability to serve a cause and a compensation for the sacrifices made by burning the midnight oil. This evening\, ALIF joins your dear ones in celebrating your success. I am sure that Master Narain\, your grandpa\, would relish this occasion if he were still alive. And allow me to imitate Sarah Palin to add “I have every confidence that Judge Narain has the experience\, intellect\, wisdom and character to be an outstanding Supreme Court justice.”

SUMMARY:SPEECH IN HONOUR OF JACQUELINE SAUZIER BY PRESIDENT OF ALIF

SUMMARY:SPEECH IN HONOUR OF MOHAMED VAYID\, GOSK BY PRESIDENT OF ALIF SOCIETY

SUMMARY:SPEECH IN HONOUR OF THE GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF MAURITIUS

SUMMARY:DELEGATION OF THE WORLD ISLAMIC ECONOMIC FORUM
DESCRIPTION:A Delegation of the WORLD ISLAMIC ECONOMIC FORUM \,led by Tun Musa Hitam\, visited Mauritius on the invitation of Alif Society. The contact with WIEF was established during the 5th WIEF forum in Jakarta. \nThe delegation paid courtesy calls on the Minister of Finance\, Mr. V. Lutchmeenaraidoo and the PM \, Mr Pravin Jugnauth. The WIEF delegation proposed to organise its annual meeting in 2018. Unfortunately\, there was no follow-up and Mauritius lost the chance to benefit from the capital of the Muslim world.

SUMMARY:RECEPTION IN HONOR OF RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR IRADA ZEYNALOVA
DESCRIPTION:HE with the Chief Guest Hon Shakeel Mohamed \nWATER EDGE GARDEN was the venue of the reception \n \nHE Irada Zeynalova in company of Alif Members \nGift offered by Tanzilah to HE Irada Zeynalova \norganised by Alif Society in honour of the Russian ambassador Irada Zeynalova in the presence of about 150 guests.\nThe menu was Briani.\nAfter dinner\, the President welcomed the guests during a speech and the Ambassador in her delivery thanked Alif and talked about the Russia-Mauritius relationship. \nSPEECH IN HONOUR OF RUSSIAN AMBASSDOR IRADA ZEYNALOVA 5 DECEMBER 2024\nLadies and gentlemen\,\nThank you very much for having responded so generously to our invitation this evening. Will you please all rise for the National Anthems rendered by Stephany\, our Diva. Thank you.\nIt is good to see you all for this moment of sharing and fellowship. I am sure you have made new friends and there have been many exchanges of cards.\nThe business of tonight is to honour Ambassador Irada Zeynalova\, from the country with onion-shaped church domes and of superlatives……..the biggest country in the world\, housing the biggest and deepest fresh water lake\, a country with 11 time zones\, the first one to send a man Yuri Gargarin\, a woman\, Valentina Tereshkova and an animal\, the dog Leika\, in space\, the first country to produce the Covid 19 vaccine\, the land of Leo Tolstoy\, Anton Chekhov\, Vladimir Alexander\, Pushkin\, Vladimir Mayakovsky and Fyodor Dostoyevsky and other world famous novelists and poets\, with architectural treasures like the Kremlin\, and St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum\, without forgetting its ballet.\nIn this tumultuous world\, Putin is mastering and driving geo-politics just as successfully as he has mastered the martial arts of judo. Before hosting the BRICS members in the most Muslim Russian city of Kazan\, he got the SCO meeting held in Pakistan to endorse its Astana agreement with the aim of developing synergy between BRICS and Eurasian economic Union. With Russia’s access to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean through the Karakoram Pass and with the thaw in the North pole aiding to open new connectivity to the rest of the world\, Eurasia will become a unified land and will signal the end of unipolarity\, the scourge of present times. \nCould one justifiably speculate about the prophecy of Geographer kinder becoming a reality\, namely that the country controlling central Eurasia will control the world. It is not the third world that will lament at this outcome as Russia has always been the friend of the wretched of the earth\, especially in its struggle to fight colonialism.\nAmbassador\, I wonder how many people realise the constructive role that your country is playing in drawing a totally new world architecture with its economic might. You are replaying Bandung and breathing a new life into the spirit of the non-aligned movement dreamt of by Tito\, Nasser\, Nehru and Sukarno. Russia\, in alliance with 60% of the world’s population\, 40% of global GDP and 22 % of world’s total land area represents a treasure trove.\nIt will be a new dawn which can enjoy indivisible security against the present national security which requires military bases dotting around the world. Indivisible security is in line with the UN charter. Irada\, multipolarity is a must for this fractured world; it is the tool that would enforce rights\, justice and co-operation.\nWe are travelling hopefully to reach the destination of this world of milk and honey with Putin at your steering wheel and with the aid of his all-weather friend XI Jinping\, co-captain of ship Hope. Russia under Putin\, has weathered and is weathering many storms. He tried to avoid the war in Ukraine\, welcoming Turkey’s proposal of a peace formula; he invited Ukrainian heads for peace talks but alas was forced into a war which he has masterly turned into a war of attrition and bleeding Ukraine whose deranged leader cannot face reality. This reality is glaring into the eyes of those who have them to see. Do you need to be rocket scientist to understand that the country which has taught a lesson or two to Hitler and Napolean will make a mincemeat of a small fry. The Russian bear\, equipped with the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile that travels at mac 10-12 and can turn its target into gas cannot be coerced into humiliation again. No\, not in a hundred years. This is the hard fact.\nA new game changer may be the proximity of Putin with Donald Trump who has no secrets about his opinions. The Master chef must be able to talk Trump into leaving his elusive moral high ground and threatening to nuke all and sundry and to embrace a peaceful world.\nRussia has a great future and a generous heart as well. You have already demonstrated it by offering your hydrocarbons at $30 a barrel when its going world price was $60 a barrel. If we can be assured of sufficient food and energy at affordable prices\, we can sleep peacefully\, far from the nightmares caused by dreamers of hegemony\, those dreamers who cannot assure security in the Red Sea against the missiles of a rag tag primitive army. Irada\, we are opening our arms\, will you embrace us?\nYou are moving full throttle in your de-dolarization trail. Traveling hopefully is better than to arrive. But in this journey\, one would legitimately ask you: aren’t you folks inspired by your great Tolstoy whose mantra is: “if you feel pain\, you are alive\, if you feel people’s pain\, you are a human being”. We would like to assure you we are all human beings. And we would like to wish you well. In the meantime\, we would like to wish you a happy and productive stay among us. As a token of our new friendship\, we would request you to accept a small present from the hands of our secretary\, Tanzilah.

SUMMARY:DINNER-RECEPTION in honour of the new Indian HC to Mauritius H.E Shri ANURAG SRIVASTAVA
DESCRIPTION:On 6 February 2025\, ALIF SOCIETY welcomed the new Indian HC\, Sri Anurag Srivastava\, over dinner at the Water Edge Garden\, in the presence of many personalities. \nAfter the cocktail\, the guests [about 150] were seated for a dinner which was followed by speeches and dessert. \nBelow is the speech by the President of Alif\, Mr Dawood Auleear:- \nFolks\, \nWe have the pleasure to welcome tonight Shri ANURAG SRIVASTAVA who comes from the world biggest democracy\, the land of the grandfathers of the majority of Mauritians\, of Nobel and other laureates\, of Tagore\, A R Rahman\, Arundhati Roy\, Mahatma Gandhi\, Abdul Kalam\, Shakuntala Devi\, of 22 scheduled languages and 19\,500 dialects to express love diversely\, the land of spices that render our food so tasty. The names I have quoted are a good mix as Democracy needs dissenters and critical thinkers as well to avoid homogenization\, regimentation of thought and Mono-culturalism which may in turn lead to uniformity but alas\, never to genuine unity. At the same time\, let us not forget the Big Fat Indian Wedding that generates $71 billion in celebrations and produces a positive effect on the GDP. HC\, one idea springs to my mind: why don’t we try and outsource some of those weddings to our hotels. \nWe have the luck to be loved by India and we love India too. High Commissioner\, it is you and your colleagues that have been relentlessly working towards this love affair. But what makes India to be loved? It is because of India’s generosity and its democracy that allow a peaceful co-habitation of adepts of so many religions and speakers of so many languages and people of so many physical traits who all sing in unison Jana Gana Mana. \nHC\, India and Mauritius have no enemies\, except one………. the threat of poverty. To keep the wolves at bay\, PM Modi has called for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliance. Since you are our seniors\, we let you lead the way in the struggle and do allow us\, your juniors to reap the fruits of your labor. \nAt a time\, when the world seems to be in turmoil because of the change in the behavioral pattern of states\, India has no choice but to change its tools of foreign policy. A volunteer has still to be found to stand in the shoes of your foreign policy team. Who would be mad enough to carry the can for this omnidirectional diplomat called Jaishankar and walk on his tight rope and to produce ‘Viksit Bharat’\, ‘Developed India’. With so many neighbours\, some with unstable governments\, a constant effort is required through thoughtful and unifying regional leadership to have peace. \nViksit Bharat and Vishwa Bandhu are lofty ideals for a foreign policy. India does not want to give up though it requires Herculean efforts to achieve them. To proceed toward those foreign policy goals\, India needs to travel light\, avoid unnecessary enemies\, make the largest number of friends; the million-dollar question is how to find friends in a volatile and turbulent and unpredictable world landscape.  How can you draw a map if you are facing uncertainty? Finding answers to the questions raised must be left to specialists but let me point out one. Margaret Thatcher had said: ‘No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he’d only had good intentions; he had money as well.’ And India heard that voice loud and clear. The demographic deficit is haunting many parts of the world and India’s supply of manpower have a great future as a great foreign income earner. \nHC\, you are present in faraway Arctic with your Himadri Research station where you are focusing on glaciology\, carbon recycling\, atmospheric pollution and space weather. Your underwater IndARC observatory is enriching you by a comparative study between arctic and monsoon weathers. The outcome is obvious. It would be a boon to the Indian subcontinent meteorological services and attract good neighborliness. \nYour Arctic policy\, titled “India and the Arctic: outlines your interests\, which include economic and resource prospects\, sea connectivity\, and reinforcing its presence in the region. This sea connectivity is crucial as it reduces the travel time considerably and have positive effects on costs of goods and services. The Arctic becomes increasingly important for New Delhi as it seeks to expand sea trade routes to access more markets for its growing exports\, and secure passages for shipments of oil and other vital commodities. \nLet us return to your immediate neighbourhood\, the MENA\, an important source of your energy needs and which houses 500m people\, is rich in hydrocarbon and is a potential green corridor; it has traditionally been a bridge between Europe and Asia. You are leaving no stone unturned to provide a supply chain with the IMEC\, the India-Middle East- Europe corridor. \nFinally\, India will end up creating and being part of a spaghetti sort of connectivity linking all the parts of the world that will help a flow of trade and other exchanges at affordable costs\, eliminating possible disruption in the supply chain for the benefit of the world. What a blessing to the countries of the Indian Ocean Bassin. Would it be premature to say” thank you India”? \nHC\, your country sings Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam\, the world is one family; we believe\, you are also working towards this lofty ideal. We believe India has no choice but to succeed in its effort to create a family of nations and teach a lesson to the UNO. God speed India. \nAnd on your role HC\, Jon Huntsman Jr has the word “the real secret about diplomats is that they are trained to say something when there is nothing to say and to say nothing when there is something to say” and I would add: say something about meat when you meet the butcher\, and say something about bread when you meet the baker\, and say something about sandwich when you meet them together. Happy stay in our country with all our best wishes. \n  \nFrom left Farhad Ramjaun\, Yasine Mohabuth\, Hon Reza Uteem\, Mrs Uteem \nFrom right HE Srivastava\, Dawood Rawat\, VP Hungley \nHon Speaker Shirine Aumeeruddy with Mr Ka Yee \nFrom right Greory\, Alla and Tony Leung \nFawwaz Jaunbaccus\,Alif member [third from right] entertaining our guests \nFrom Right: Tayab Nunkoo\, Hon Sukon\, Mrs Sukon and Tanzilah Nunkoo \nHE Srivastava with VP Hungley \nHon Fawzi Allymun with our guests \nFrom right Swaley Peerkhan entertaining Hon Osman Mohamed \nMonique Chan handing over a present to HC of India \n \nHC and VP Hungley
