TRIBUTE TO RAFICK OSMAN , AGREAT SUPPORTER OF ALIF SOCIETY

2025-03-17T12:04:09+04:00

LETTER TO PERE SOUCHON

2025-03-17T11:59:26+04:00

TRIBUTE TO SIR EDOUARD LIM FAT A GREAT MAURITIAN BEHIND THE INDUSTRIALISATION OF MAURITIUS

2025-03-20T13:45:16+04:00

Sir Edouard Lim Fat Sir Edouard Lim Fat has left us on Tuesday last at the age of 94. This man has marked the History of Mauritius by charting its contours for development. The contribution of this Icon can best be appreciated by looking back at the economic and social conditions of our nation in the 70s. The “overpopulated baracoon” as someone nastily called us, had miserably failed to arrest the population explosion and had reached the state of “the tragedy of the commons” in its agricultural expansion. To satisfy our craze for sugar mentality, the only vacant spots left to [...]

TRIBUTE TO JOSE PONCINI, A GREAT MAURITIAN

2025-03-17T11:38:36+04:00

PRESS ARTICLE ON LANGUAGE ISSUE IN MAURITIUS

2025-03-17T10:39:24+04:00

Bhojpuri Mahotsav 2024 By Dawood Auleear This week marks the launching of Bhojpuri Mahotsav 2024 in Mauritius with the participation of international delegates and local organisations: Bhojpuri Speaking Union, the MGI and Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund. The opening ceremony will be performed by our Prime Minister and the closing ceremony by our President. This gives a strong signal that the Government cares about Mauritian oral heritage. If we are ready to spend fabulous sums of money to save rare species, it is also legitimate to invest to save a language that makes us human. Transmission of human culture, songs, stories and [...]

TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND, MENTOR AND SUPPORTER

2025-03-16T18:32:33+04:00

It is with great sadness that I learnt through WhatsApp messages the passing away of Yousuf Mohamed, SC, GOSK, at the age of 88 at his home in Quatre Bornes. Yousuf was a healthy man, with healthy habits. He was jogging even at past eighty. But an incurable disease forced him to look for treatment in Réunion. He became bedridden on his return home. The only way I could find out about his health was either by ringing his sons or through close friends [...]

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT LADY, SUPPORTER OF ALIF SOCIETY

2025-03-16T18:19:03+04:00

TRIBUTE NAJMA CURRIMJEE Najma, wife of Bashir Currimjee, passed away on Saturday 30 July. Funeral prayers were said at the Currimjees in Port Louis and she was laid to rest in Riche Terre cemetery. She is the fourth child in a family of five children, (three girls and two boys). She started her education in India and completed it in the USA. Najma’s smiling face is the first thing that comes to my mind when somebody mentions her name. That smile was wrapped in a warmth that only Najma knew the secret of. She radiated the grace of the [...]
